What's included

BACP is a member of the Coalition for Inclusion and Anti-Oppressive Practice. It is a collaborative and cross-industry group consisting of nine organisations, who are invested in making real and positive change in Counselling and Psychotherapy training to improve diversity in the counselling and psychotherapy professions.

The current focus of the Coalition is supporting anti-oppressive and inclusive professional training as part of a greater vision to address further barriers to inclusive practice, particularly in relation to racially and ethnically minoritised communities.

The Coalition is working together to commission and deploy toolkits which aim to support the development of skills, knowledge and understanding for delivering inclusive counselling and psychotherapy training.

The first of these toolkits ‘Race is complicated: a toolkit for psychological therapies training’ focuses on race and ethnicity. The primary objectives of this toolkit is to provide support on three areas of course provision:

  1. the institution
  2. the training programme
  3. the individual tutor

The aims of the event are to:

  • educate and develop awareness of how the systems within training institutions can impact marginalised groups
  • inform and guide on how to apply the toolkit at an institutional level
  • provide information and guidance on how to embed anti oppressive and inclusive practice into training programmes
  • provide support and guidance on how the toolkit can help the individual trainer to embed anti-oppressive and inclusive practice into their teaching practice
  • demonstrate how the toolkit can be used as an interactive guide to develop a deeper understanding and awareness of the sensitivities of race and diversity, and how it is represented within ourselves and in clients
