An exploration of the impact of child sexual abuse on the sibling(s) of the child who was sexually abused

STUDY BACKGROUND

This study looks at the experience of counsellors and psychotherapists working with adult clients who grew up in households where one or more of their siblings was sexually abused by a parent or person in loco parentis but they were not (the client group) with a view to understanding the participants experience of the short, medium and long term impact on the client group.

It is led by John Gillies-Wilkes and supervised by Kirsten Antoncich FRSA, UKCP Clinical Psychotherapist, MSc Counselling (Children and Young People) Course Lead in the College of Psychology at Birmingham City University. The project has been approved by the Psychology Research Ethics Committee.

WHAT PARTCIPANTS WILL NEED TO DO?

Complete a simple yes/no questionnaire to show whether they have or have not worked with the client group and if so whether they would be prepared to take part in a semi structured interview.
2.

Take part in a semi structured camera and audio recorded interview via MS Teams

One off interviews will last for thirty minutes and will take place within a framework of seven or so questions. They will be held during July 2024.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE TO TAKE PART?

The first part of the study (questionnaire) is open to counsellors and psychotherapists over the age of 18 who are members of BACP or UKCP and currently practising in the UK. The second part of the study is open to those who have experience of working with the client group.

ARE THERE ANY RISKS OF TAKING PART?

Child sexual abuse is a sensitive topic that many people find upsetting. It is recommended that potential participants who feel that they may become upset do not take part in the interviews or only take part if they have a support system in place.
