Navigating Trauma: A Qualitative Exploration of Trainee Counsellors’ First Experiences with Client Trauma Disclosure

Research Aim:
This study seeks to explore how trainee counsellors navigate and make sense of their initial experiences with client trauma disclosure. By gaining insights into their emotional, psychological, and professional experiences, this research aims to inform the development of comprehensive training and support for trainee counsellors.

Participant Criteria:
I am seeking participants who meet the following criteria:

  • Current trainee counsellors enrolled in accredited counselling/psychotherapy programs in the UK.
  • Have completed at least 6 months of clinical placement experience.
  • Have experienced at least one client trauma disclosure during their placement.
  • Aged 18 or over.

What Participation Involves:
Participants will be asked to take part in a one-hour confidential interview conducted online via Microsoft Teams. The interview will focus on their personal and professional experiences of navigating client trauma disclosure.

Ethics Approval:
This study has been reviewed and approved by the University of East London’s School of Psychology Ethics Committee.
