Considering sensory factors when working with young autistic people

Mark Wallis shares his expertise in working with young autistic people with a particular focus on sensory needs. He shares his self-sensory assessment and other practical tools for accommodating the sensory needs of young clients.

A meeting of minds

Frances Coleman-Williams explores the common difficulties when neurodivergent clients work with neurotypical therapists. She looks at issues around communication, empathy and biases and how to work together with your client to find solutions. She explains why a neurodivergent counsellor may sometimes better meet the needs of a neurodivergent client and how you can refer on when necessary.

Understanding domestic abuse therapeutically, for safe practice

Jenna Clark shares her expertise on working therapeutically with domestic abuse victims and perpetrators. She gives an overview of the different types of abuse including coercive control and shares the national picture.
Jenna explains the importance of psychoeducation for domestic abuse victims and perpetrators and shares the Duluth Wheel of Power and Control and the Wheel of equality, as tools for this.

Young men's mental health

Alison Theaker from Eye to Eye counselling explains ‘The boys project’, an intervention project started in 2022 for meeting the mental health needs of boys and young men. She describes the factors contributing to the low rates of males accessing their services and how they worked to overcome this by creating posters with QR codes linking directly to local services they could access, and a film with a workbook that could be delivered by school counsellors or teachers within schools.

Referrals to high intensity interventions in IAPT: level playing field or rigged game?

Charlie Duncan shares the preliminary findings of this joint unpublished study into referrals to high intensity interventions in Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT) in NHS settings.
