A Revised Supervisor Accreditation Scheme is being introduced with effect from 30 September 2006. It is presented in a more user-friendly format. The criteria themselves have not changed. Therefore, any supervisor who can meet the current criteria will have no difficulty in making an application via this Revised Scheme. The revised Scheme will run for a minimum of three years pending a full review of the supervisor accreditation scheme. The application forms can be downloaded from the website or can be obtained in hard copy from the office. Members who are currently in the process of preparing an application for Supervisor Accreditation may, if they wish, continue to complete their application on the current forms provided that they are submitted by 31 April 2007. After that date only applications submitted under the Revised Scheme will be accepted. Criteria for BACP counselling supervisor accreditation Introduction "Counselling Supervision is a formal and mutually agreed arrangement for counsellors to discuss their work regularly with someone who is normally an experienced and competent counsellor and familar with the process of counselling supervision" (BACP Code of Ethics and Practice for Supervisors of Counsellors. January 1996). Counselling Supervision is considered essential for effective counselling. All BACP members working as counsellors are bound by the
Ethical Framework for Good Practice in Counselling and Psychotherapy to monitor their counselling through ongoing supervision. BACP has in operation a scheme for accrediting Counselling Supervisors of Individuals or Groups or both. If you work as a Counselling Supervisor and think that you meet the following criteria then you may wish to consider making an application. Details of how to order the application pack are given after the criteria. Candidates can be Accredited as a Counselling Supervisor for Individuals OR Groups OR both Criteria These criteria apply to those engaged in individual and/or group supervision of counsellors/psychotherapists. Applicants are required to submit evidence of meeting all of the stated criteria. Candidates applying for accreditation as a supervisor of both individuals and groups should submit two applications to show how each criterion has been met for both individuals and groups. Eligibility criteria - Is in current individual membership of BACP
- Has professional indemnity insurance.
Counsellor/Psychotherapist practice - Has had a minimum of five years experience of supervised practice as a counsellor/psychotherapist having undertaken at least 600 hours of supervised practice during that time.
Supervision of Client Work - Is in current practice as a supervisor of counsellors/psychotherapists.
- Has worked for at least two years as a supervisor of counsellors/psychotherapists.
- Has undertaken at least 180 contact hours of supervision with counsellors/psychotherapists over a period of not less than two and not more than six years.
- Has had an arrangement for access to supervision/consultative support for the supervision work submitted under criterion 6.
- Has an ongoing arrangement for access to supervision/consultative support for their supervision work.
Reflective Practice Criteria - Professional Development
9.1 Can describe a continuing professional development activity, relevant to your supervision work. 9.2 Can provide a rationale for the choice of activity with reference to your supervision practice. 9.3 Can demonstrate how the activity has influenced your supervision practice. - Knowledge, Practice and the Use of Supervision
10.1 Can identify a knowledge base of the supervision practice by: 10.1.1 Showing how the knowledge was gained. 10.1.2 Showing knowledge of the responsibilities and authority of the supervisor. 10.1.3 Showing an awareness of issues of difference and equality. 10.2 Can demonstrate supervision practice consistent with the knowledge base described with reference to: 10.2.1 Contracting with a supervisee or supervisees. 10.2.2 Establishing a working relationship with a supervisee or supervisees. 10.2.3 Conducting a working relationship with a supervisee or supervisees. 10.2.4 Ending a working relationship with a supervisee or supervisees. 10.2.5 Evaluating the effectiveness of the working relationship. 10.2.6 Awareness of issues of difference and equality. 10.2.7 Compliance with the Association’s Ethical Framework for Good Practice in Counselling and Psychotherapy. 10.3 Can demonstrate how reflection on the work of supervision influences practice by: 10.3.1 Reflecting on the supervision process individually and with a supervisor/consultant. 10.3.2 Describing the awareness gained through this reflection. 10.3.3 Demonstrating its application in practice.
